Recreating Tradition

Based on oral interviews with the people of Penang and observations of the movements and sounds made by hawkers and traders, the musical dance drama will feature ko-tai and ronggeng songs and dances, with texts and dialogues created by the performers themselves.

Inspiration also comes from bangsawan extra turns which attracted the young and old with cha-cha-cha, rumba, inang, zapin and other dances. These extra turns were performed as interludes when sets were being changed in bangsawan theatre. Popular songs by ko-tai singers and P Ramlee which were staged at Penang’s Wembley and New World Parks will also be performed.

Cross Cultural Exchange

This production promotes pluralism and border crossings. The adult artists and young performers are multi-ethnic.  The story, music and dance are based on Asian experiences although western acting techniques have been incorporated.

Multiculturalism is also portrayed in the mixture of Malay, Hokkien and English lyrics embodying typical multilingual conversations at the Penang market place, coffeeshop, home or school. References are made to the wonderful cross-cultural cuisine Penang is so famous for.

Through song, music, dance and drama, this performance promises to engage audiences in the multiple untold stories about the history of Penang since Merdeka. By projecting multiculturalism, the show makes a point about the inter-textuality of Penang’s multi-ethnic society and the spirit of Muhibbah (goodwill) among its people. It evokes Bangsa Malaysia and provides an interactive site for a new way of being Malaysian.
