Kisah Pulau Pinang, the first of the trilogy, begins with the development of Penang as a cosmopolitan port in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries where diverse ethnic groups interacted and eclectic cultures emerged. Through song and music, the audience is taken to the market where different people interacted, religious buildings (such as the Chinese Kuan Yin temple, Kapitan Keling mosque and the Indian Sri Maha Mariamman temple) which took care of the needs of immigrants. Acheh mosque was alive with the activities of pilgrims who stopped in Penang on their way to Mecca, brokers, ticketing agencies, shops and printing presses. The music is written for the gamelan and wayang kulit ensemble, while lyrics are set to the Penang traditions of boria and dondang sayang as well as the modern rap by the young performers.
