Ronggeng Merdeka

Ronggeng Merdeka, the second part of the trilogy, features Penang’s journey from the 1930s, through the Japanese Occupation, up to the period of Merdeka. It captures people’s stories about how war or choosing which political party to join changed their lives. Women played a big role in society in times of war. The main form used was Ronggeng, a type of Malay social dance in which mixed sex couples dance and exchange verses to the accompaniment of a violin, accordion, one or two frame drums, and a gong. This musical drama captures the multicultural setting of Great World Park (tua se kai) where different forms of theatre and music were staged side by side in the past and where cultural mixing occurred.
